Chill Guy

Where it came from
A drawing posted by artist Phillip Banks on X in October 2023, captioned "my new character is just a chill guy." It sat quietly for about a year, then blew up through TikTok photo slideshows around August to October 2024.
A brown anthropomorphic dog stands there in a gray sweater and rolled-up jeans, hands shoved in his pockets, giving a tiny half-smile and a sideways glance. That's the whole image. He is a guy who is chill. You slap him on any situation where you've decided to stop caring and just vibe through it — failing a test, ignoring your responsibilities, watching everything fall apart — and the caption is usually some version of "just a chill guy who couldn't care less."
For a few months this was everywhere. He became the official mascot of being unbothered, the visual shorthand for emotionally checking out. TikTok ran it into the ground first, then it spread to phone wallpapers, merch, and at one point a Solana memecoin that briefly hit a market cap in the hundreds of millions before cratering.
Here's the catch. Banks watched his character get printed on T-shirts and slapped on crypto tokens by people who never asked, and he started firing off DMCA takedowns on the commercial knockoffs. The crackdown plus the sheer speed of the cycle killed it fast — Chill Guy was a 2024 thing and stopped being chill the moment money got involved. Dead now, but everyone who was online that year knows exactly who he is.
