Clown Applying Makeup

Where it came from
A four-panel meme showing a person progressively putting on clown makeup, each panel representing a stage of self-deception. Emerged in 2019.
Four panels of someone applying clown makeup, step by step. Each panel is labeled with a stage of escalating denial. By the fourth panel they're in full clown — wig, nose, paint — and it's clear they've been lying to themselves the whole way. "Thinking they'll text back." "Thinking they're just busy." "Thinking maybe their phone is broken." "Getting ready for the date they invented."
It's a tight self-roast format. The metaphor does all the heavy lifting — the progression from normal face to full clown maps perfectly onto the progression from reasonable hope to full delusion. And the final panel is always "I'm the clown".
Still used, especially for dating and social-dynamic jokes.
