Dancing Cockroach
Where it came from
CGI artist John Karel posted a looping 3D animation of a cockroach hopping in a circle to Tumblr in July 2015. In mid-2019 someone paired it with autotuned scat singing, and it blew up in August 2019 after a tweet about Denny's bathroom roaches trying to cheer someone up.
A shiny, extremely realistic 3D cockroach bounces around in a little circle while a heavily autotuned voice goes "bee woo woauua bou bee ooo aua." It's upbeat. It's disgusting. It will not stop. The roach looks genuinely thrilled to be there, which is more than most of us can say.
The joke that made it stick was a tweet in August 2019: the cockroaches in the Denny's bathroom doing a little dance to cheer you up while you have a breakdown on the toilet. That set the template. The roach became the patron saint of grimy places and bad days, showing up whenever someone is at their lowest and the only support on offer is a bug doing a jig.
These days it's a shitpost classic. Drop it in a group chat when someone's spiraling, or when you need to signal that your coping mechanisms are held together with tape and vibes.
