Stevie Wonder Is Not Blind
Where it came from
A joke conspiracy theory that Stevie Wonder has been faking his blindness for his entire career. KnowYourMeme traces it to a teen forum thread from November 2005; it got a big boost from a 2011 YouTube clip of him seemingly reacting to a falling mic stand at a Paul McCartney show.
The premise: Stevie Wonder, blind since shortly after birth, can actually see perfectly well and has been running the longest bit in music history. "Evidence" includes clips of him catching a falling microphone, celebrities swearing he recognized them across a room, and old rumors that he once drove a bus. None of it holds up. That's the fun part.
The usual format is a photo of Stevie looking extremely pleased with himself, grinning in a loud shirt, sitting among a crowd of women or clocking something just a bit too precisely, with a caption like "they still think I'm blind." The joke is that he's quietly enjoying the view while the world feels sorry for him. Ray Charles sometimes gets dragged in as his co-conspirator.
Stevie has played along for years, and in a July 2025 concert in Cardiff he paused the show to address the rumor and confirmed, yes, he really is blind. The internet took this as further proof of how committed he is to the bit.
