This Dude Dropped One Song and Disappeared (Gotye)
Where it came from
Traces back to Gotye's 2011 mega-hit "Somebody That I Used to Know," which was inescapable in 2012. Years later the phrasing "this dude just dropped one song and dipped" turned into a recurring caption template on iFunny and beyond.
You know the song. Body paint, that one "buh-dun-dun" verse, Kimbra showing up to end him. Then Gotye just... left. The meme is basically the internet doing a double take years later like "wait, whatever happened to that guy?"
The caption writes itself: "This dude just dropped one song and dipped. Now he's just somebody that we used to know." It's a pun and a burn in one breath, which is why it never fully died. The joke lands because it's affectionate, not mean — nobody's mad, everyone's just quietly stunned a person can be that famous for that long over one track and then peace out.
Fun footnote a lot of people learn from this meme: the guy's name is Gotye, pronounced "gore-ee-yay," not "got-yee." The "GOT YE" jokes are a whole side quest.
