Addison Rae
Where it came from
A Louisiana teenager who started posting TikTok dance and lip-sync videos in July 2019, joined the Hype House that December, and became one of the app's biggest stars. She's been a recurring meme ever since, first as the face of TikTok dance culture and later as an unexpectedly credible pop star.
Phase one was peak 2020 TikTok: Addison in a ring-lit bedroom doing the same eight seconds of choreography with Charli D'Amelio, racking up millions of likes for it. Even the New York Jets wanted in and posted a duet with her in January 2020 that aged badly within about an hour. For a lot of the internet she became shorthand for "famous for dancing on an app," and people were not quiet about it.
Then came the stretch people still bring up. In March 2021 she went on Jimmy Fallon and ran through a list of viral TikTok dances without crediting the mostly Black creators who made them, which turned into a whole discourse. Her debut single "Obsessed" landed the same month and got clowned hard, and Netflix's He's All That followed that August. Ironic Addison posting was a genre of its own.
The twist is that it worked out. Her 2024 single "Diet Pepsi" and the 2025 album Addison won over the same people who used to roast her, and "Addison Rae is actually a pop girl now" became its own meme. The joke flipped from "why is she famous" to "wait, this slaps."
