Funeral Food Be So Good
Where it came from
The phrase had floated around X for years (a January 2019 tweet by @Kinggston1 got over 21,000 likes), but the meme as people know it is an Instagram Reel posted by @renegadeshow on August 11, 2023, captioned "Funeral food be so good 😋 / I be forgetting who TF died 😫." He crossposted it to TikTok on September 3, 2023, where it pulled about 5.6 million plays.
A man in his funeral best is standing at the buffet, happily loading up his plate like it's a wedding. The caption: funeral food be so good, I be forgetting who died. He is grieving, technically. He is also getting seconds of the mac and cheese.
Anyone who's been to a repast knows this is real. The aunties cooked, the trays are endless, and somewhere between the fried chicken and the peach cobbler the sadness takes a little break. The clip just says the quiet part with a full mouth.
Online it turned into the go-to reaction whenever a celebrity, influencer or public villain had a very bad day, or when someone's career "died." Post the clip, say nothing, let the plate do the talking. It's a bit cold, which is exactly why people use it.
