Khaby Lame
Where it came from
Khabane "Khaby" Lame, a Senegal-born guy living in Italy, started posting on TikTok in March 2020 after losing his factory job during the pandemic. His silent reaction to an overcomplicated phone charger life hack in February 2021 blew up, and by spring 2021 his face was a meme everywhere. Korean netizens nicknamed him 한심좌 (hansimjwa), roughly "Mr. Pathetic" or "the disappointed one."
Somebody on TikTok shows you a 14-step hack for peeling a banana with a knife, a fork and a power drill. Khaby duets it, watches with a dead stare, then peels the banana with his hands. Then comes the move: both palms turned up in front of his chest, a little shrug, lips pressed together, eyes saying "you did all that?" He never says a word. He doesn't need to.
That look is what Korea calls 한심좌. 한심하다 means something like "pathetic" or "hopeless," so he's basically the guy who finds everything you're doing a little bit sad. People send his reaction shot to friends who just did something dumb, overthought something easy, or posted a "life hack" that is clearly a cry for help. Reddit turned it into a labeling format too, with Khaby as common sense and the hack as whatever ridiculous thing the internet is doing this week.
It worked a little too well. In June 2022 he passed Charli D'Amelio to become the most-followed person on TikTok, all from a shrug. The shrug itself has become shorthand for "there was an easier way," and you'll still see it pasted under any overengineered solution.
