And I Oop
Where it came from
RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Jasmine Masters uploaded "Jasmine Masters handle your liquor" to YouTube on October 28, 2015. A clipped version of the "and I-- oop" moment blew up on Twitter starting March 1, 2019.
Jasmine Masters is mid-rant about friends who can't handle their liquor. She's on a roll, really building momentum, and then she suddenly stops, says "and I-- oop," and calmly informs the camera, "I just hit my balls." She regroups and keeps going like nothing happened. The interruption is so abrupt and so specific that it's perfect.
In 2019 Twitter cut it down to the "oop" and it became the go-to sound for being caught off guard. Someone spills tea in the group chat that you weren't ready for? And I oop. You open your bank app after a weekend out? Oop. It's the noise your soul makes when the plot twist hits you mid-sentence.
It got so big that summer it ended up glued to the VSCO girl starter pack next to "sksksk" and the Hydro Flask jokes. The full-length clip faded, but "oop" stuck around as plain internet vocabulary. Plenty of people type it daily without knowing they're quoting a drag queen who walked into a very personal injury.
