Stan Twitter
Where it came from
Named after Eminem's 2000 song "Stan," about a fan whose obsession goes very badly. The earliest known use of "stan Twitter" is a March 11, 2013 tweet predicting Azealia Banks' fanbase would "run stan twitter," and by the late 2010s it was the catch-all name for Twitter's pop fandoms.
Stan Twitter is the loud, chaotic corner of Twitter (now X) where pop fandoms live. Beyoncé fans, Nicki Minaj's Barbz, Little Monsters, K-pop fanbases, all sharing one timeline and fighting on it daily. The avatar is usually a celebrity, the bio is a fancam, and the replies are a war zone.
They run on their own language. "Skinny legend," "wig snatched," "mother," "she ate," "spill the tea." A lot of it was borrowed from Black and queer slang, which people outside the bubble then borrowed from stan Twitter without knowing it was a borrow of a borrow. They also keep a huge stockpile of reaction pics: a blurry screenshot of a singer mid-gasp can carry an entire argument.
People use "stan Twitter" both as a description and as a warning. If someone says a tweet "reached stan Twitter," it means thousands of strangers with anime-sparkle profile pics are now quoting it, and fan wars like the Barbz vs. Dua Lipa fans blowup of March 2024 show how fast that turns ugly. Still the place half your favourite slang came from, whether you like it or not.
